Could brain shutdown help prepare or carry part of a person’s identity toward continuity beyond the body? That is the question at the heart of my first research phase. I see the initial studies, survivor accounts and pineal questions as starting points for an open, hopeful conversation, not a final answer.
I am an enthusiast and independent investigator, and this inquiry is hopeful and personal for me. I want to understand how the mind, pineal gland and body chemistry could relate to higher states of consciousness and the possibility of continuity. I welcome people with more expertise to help me explore what comes next.
What evidence belongs in this question?
I regard survivor accounts as evidence relevant to the possibility of continuity and as a reason to investigate how awareness, memory and brain activity relate. In AWARE II, a hospital study of 567 in hospital cardiac arrests, 53 patients survived and 28 completed interviews. Eleven reported memories or perceptions suggestive of consciousness, and the study reported EEG activity compatible with cognitive processing during CPR.
The biological findings give this inquiry several starting points. A 2013 rat study reported a surge of organized brain activity after experimental cardiac arrest. A 2019 rat study reported increased sampled cortical DMT after arrest, while a 2026 rat study did not detect the proposed endogenous pool under different conditions. Because the protocols differed, a direct comparison could help researchers understand timing, chemistry and measurement.
For me, DMT is one part of a larger inquiry. I want to know whether the brain’s shutdown process, the pineal gland and related biochemical changes could be involved in a transition of consciousness. The first studies raise specific questions, and future work can explore them alongside the broader possibility of continuity.
Why do Mantak Chia and Caroline Leaf matter to me?
Mantak Chia’s teaching about prolonged darkness describes an attributed progression involving melatonin, pinoline, 5-MeO-DMT and DMT, alongside reports of inner light and visions. I find that connection interesting because it brings practice, chemistry and experience into one question. The source record for my first phase does not include direct serial measurements in people, which gives researchers a clear question to explore next.
I also want Dr. Caroline Leaf’s thinking about mind, the nonconscious and quantum or spiritual interpretations included in the conversation. Her framework gives me another way to ask how mind and experience might be understood, and I welcome researchers examining which parts can be described and measured.
These strands do not have to share one mechanism to belong in the same exploratory conversation. Survivor accounts, a darkness teaching, a mind framework and laboratory measurements each offer a different perspective. I want them considered together because their connections may help researchers frame questions one discipline alone might miss.
What am I asking researchers to test?
I would welcome independent studies comparing baseline and terminal chemistry with validated methods, clear detection limits and contamination controls. Where ethically approved and clinically appropriate, researchers could align available chemical samples with EEG, ECG, oxygenation, circulation and medication records. No medical care should be delayed to collect data.
For the DMT part, I want researchers to look for a reproducible change in a relevant place and time window that could influence neural targets. If they find one, they can investigate its origin and relationship to experience. If they do not, that result can refine this chemical question while the broader question of continuity remains open.
Questions about continuity beyond the body call for research designed specifically for them. One possible approach could use preregistered concealed targets, precise timing, blinded assessment, safeguards against information leakage and independent replication. I hope this kind of careful work can add insight to a question that matters deeply to people.
My first phase does not include every account, tradition, discipline or proposed mechanism. That is why I see it as a beginning, not a limit on what might be true. I hope researchers and readers will join me, bringing new sources, experience and perspectives so we can ask better questions about continuity after death.
This article invites research and discussion. It is not a recommendation to use DMT or ayahuasca, attend a darkness retreat or change medical care.

About this report
I originated this proposal and wrote this report as a first exploratory synthesis. The source record for this phase is partial, and I welcome people who can help check, challenge and expand it. I hope this opening work leads to more insight into a question I believe is worth asking.
